A few years ago, men asking about hair color mostly meant covering gray as quietly as possible. That's changed. More of our clients are coming in specifically for color — not to hide anything, but as a real style choice. Here's what's actually popular in the chair right now, and what to know before you book.
1. Natural-looking highlights
The most requested men's color by far: subtle, low-maintenance highlights that lighten a shade or two rather than dramatically changing the color. Applied correctly, they look like a natural effect of the Florida sun rather than an obvious dye job — which is exactly the point for most guys trying it for the first time.
2. Gray blending
Instead of fully covering gray, gray blending softens the contrast between gray and natural hair so it looks less like "salt and pepper patches" and more like an intentional, even tone. It requires less frequent touch-ups than full coverage color, which makes it popular with clients who don't want a monthly commitment.
3. Bold platinum and fashion colors
On the opposite end, we're seeing more requests for full platinum, ash tones, and the occasional fashion color for special events. These require a bleach process and more chair time than highlights, so we always start with a consultation to check hair health and set realistic expectations before committing.
4. Beard coloring
A newer request: coloring just the beard, either to match a darker head of hair or to blend gray in the beard specifically, which tends to come in lighter and coarser than the hair on top. It's a smaller, faster service that makes a noticeable difference in the mirror.
Why professional coloring matters
Box dye made for men is designed to be foolproof, which usually means one flat, unnatural tone applied evenly across hair that was never one uniform color to begin with. A professional colorist adjusts for your natural base color, how porous or damaged your hair is, and how it will fade over the following weeks — which is the difference between color that looks "done" and color that looks natural.
Curious what would actually suit you? Bring a photo of a look you like and we'll tell you honestly whether it'll work with your hair — no guesswork, no surprises.
